Abstract
The article analyses the political processes of the “perestroika” period in Moldova, which led to a sharp rise in ethno-political tensions between the official Chisinau and a number of regions of the country (Transnistria, Gagauzia, etc.). The nationalist forces that came to power in 1990, instead of political and legal settlement of the growing contradictions, resorted to an attempt to resolve them by force, which led to an armed conflict in Transnistria. Russia played a decisive role in de-escalating the conflict by initiating a peacekeeping mission and establishing a security zone. These measures have been proving to be effective in maintaining peace in the region for 30 years.
