Muslims in Scotland: socio-cultural aspects of integration

https://doi.org/10.48137/2074-2975_2022_9-10_54

Abstract

The article uses the example of Scotland to give a scientific understanding of the socio-cultural aspects of the integration of ethno-religious minorities into European communities. It is shown that Scottish nationalism is inclusive and does not differ in Islamophobia, unlike English nationalism and British chauvinism. Anglo-Saxon policies of discrimination against national and religious minorities have led to a steady trend of expanding social and political alliance of Scottish nationalists with local Muslims. Scottish Muslims (especially young Muslims) striving for a multi-layered identity face social isolation and a sense of detachment from their community, leading to their radicalization.
